Ahmed al-Sharaa, aka Mohammad al-Jolani, head of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), with Stephen Hickey, director of the Middle East and North Africa department at Britain’s Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office in Damascus. 
In the name of building a “moderate opposition,” London established a social service and media network in areas controlled by HTS, benefitting the group it branded as a dangerous Al Qaeda affiliate.
